Did you Know...
Valentine lived during the days of the Roman Empire, around the 3rd century. Popular legend says that when the Emperor Claudius forbade marriage (he thought single men made better soldiers!) Valentine, who was a priest, continued marrying young lovers in secret. It is said that, while in prison, he fell in love with a young girl (possibly the jailer's daughter) and writing to her, signed himself "from your Valentine" -  a phrase we still use today.

In the UK, St. Valentine's day was popularly celebrated in the 17th Century, and in the 18th Century, it became common for lovers to send handwritten notes, and later printed cards, to show their affection - something which at that time had to be done discreetly - which perhaps lead to the tradition of sending an anonymous valentine.
