Chocolate Trivia: Milk chocolate was first invented in 1875, when Henry Nestlé produced the first condensed milk. Today, most milk chocolate is made using powdered milk solids, along with vanilla and lecithin (which acts as a stabiliser). Milk chocolate contains more sugar and fewer cocoa solids than plain chocolate, which is why it never tastes bitter.
The Aztecs used cocoa bean to make a bitter drink, after mixing them with chilli peppers! If chilli and chocolate sound an unlikely combination, try one of our chilli truffles and you might be pleasantly surprised!
Cocoa butter, which is derived from the fat content of the cocoa bean, is used for many non-food uses as well. In its pure form it is a hard fat which melts at body temperature, so is widely used in cosmetics. It is a natural moisturiser, keeping the skin soft and supple, and is often recommended for skin irritations and stretch marks during pregnancy. Cocoa butter is also used in soaps to improve the lather.
