Chocolate Trivia... Because cacao trees are vulnerable to damage by too much sun or wind, they are planted under "mother trees" which provide shade and act as a windbreak. Coffee and banana trees are often used to protect younger plants, and coconut palms or kola nut trees protect more mature trees. A cacao tree starts to produce pods after 3-4 years, and will continue to do so for 20-30 years. It is important therefore to renew trees in established plantations - which is a problem for many small cocoa farmers, who are often too poor to invest in new planting.
