Chocolate Trivia - is Chocolate an Aphrodisiac? For centuries chocolate has been reputed to be an aphrodisiac. Allegedly, the Aztec leader Montezuma drank fifty cups a day, particularly before visiting his harem, and Cassenova preferred chocolate to champagne. On the other hand, modern science has typically rejected such claims.
However, in a recent study Italian researchers from San Raffaele hospital, Milan, found: "Women who have a daily intake of chocolate showed higher levels of desire than women who did not have this habit. Chocolate can have a positive physiological impact on a woman's sexuality."
Chocolate stimulates the body's production of endorphins, producing a feeling of wellbeing similar to "being in love". It also contains sugar and small quantities of the stimulants caffeine and theobromine which increase energy levels.
So, perhaps chocolate is the "food of love" after all! It's certainly well established as the perfect gift for Valentine's Day...
