Easter Egg Traditions: In the North of England, at Easter time, a traditional game is played with hard boiled "pace eggs" where each player hits the other players egg with their own. This is known as "egg dumping" or "egg jarping". The winner is the holder of the last intact egg. The losers get to eat their eggs. It is also played in Bulgaria, Croatia, Serbia, Romania and many other countries.
Another UK traction is "egg rolling", where painted eggs are rolled down a steep hill - the idea being to get your egg as far as possible without it breaking up. In the US, egg rolling is a race, carried out on flat ground, pushing the egg along with a spoon. The Easter Egg roll on the White House lawn is a popular annual event.
The decorating of hen's eggs has been a widespread tradition for centuries. Pysanka are Ukrainian coloured eggs and were the inspiration for our "Pysanka" gift-wrap. The traditional geometric patterns have deep folklore meanings, and the eggs would be hung up in barns or even buried in fields to promote fertility and ward off evil. They are created by covering part of the egg in wax and then submerging it in dye, so colouring the part with no wax. The process is then repeated with different dyes to produce a multi-coloured pattern.
