Chocolate Trivia: The first English chocolate manufacturers were all Quaker families - the Frys, Cadburys, Rowntrees and Terrys. Initially they all produced drinking chocolate (cocoa), partly with the aim of giving the masses a healthy alternative to drinking gin. They also provided their workers with housing, education and excellent working conditions - the village built by the Cadburys in Bournville is still one of the most beautiful in the country. Some of the big names in the US were also founded as family businesses: Milton Hershey (who was also a Quaker) sold his first chocolate bar in 1895, and in 1911, Frank and Ethel Mars started their chocolate company in Tacoma WA, later introducing Snickers and M&Ms to the world.
